Beverage Photography Workshop (Group)
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This 4-hour hands-on workshop is designed to demystify studio lighting and teach you how to photograph glass and liquids with commercial-level precision.
We will focus on the "Art of the Static Shot." You will learn to control reflections on curved glass, create the perfect "glow" in translucent liquids, and master the condensation techniques used by food stylists. By the end of this session, you will understand how to build lighting setups from scratch to create both bright, refreshing cocktail images and moody, dark spirit portraits.
NOTE: This workshop focuses on lighting control, composition, and styling. It does not cover high-speed splash photography or flash duration mechanics.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE
-
Welcome & Introduction
-
Continuous vs. Strobe: Why we use flash for beverages (crispness, color consistency, power).
-
The Settings: Understanding Sync Speed (usually 1/160 or 1/200) and why Shutter Speed doesn't control flash exposure.
-
The Modifiers: Introduction to Softboxes, Stripboxes (for tall glass highlights), Snoots, and Scrims.
-
-
Physics of Glass (Theory & Demo)
-
The Family of Angles: How to position lights so the flash doesn't appear as a harsh glare in the glass.
-
Reflection: Dealing with how liquid bends light.
-
Blackline vs. Whiteline: The two classic techniques for defining the edges of clear glassware using cards.
-
-
Hands-On Setup: The "Refreshment" Look (High Key)
This hour is dedicated to mastering the classic, bright, and airy commercial look typically used for clear spirits, fizzy drinks, and refreshing cocktails. We will focus on how to make the liquid "glow" from within, clearly separating the glass from the background and how to highlight edges which creates two beautiful, long, thin highlights that define the glass's edges, known as a "whiteline" technique.
-
Hands-On Setup: The "Moody" Look (Low Key)
Learn how to create the dramatic and sophisticated Low-Key aesthetic, commonly used for dark spirits (like whiskey and rum), rich stouts, and premium cold brew. This style emphasizes texture, mood, and depth.
-
Styling Workshop:
-
The Perfect Droplet: Learn how to create the perfect droplet and water misting technique for long-lasting condensation.
-
Ice: Managing real ice vs. acrylic cubes.
-
-

James Goh
Had such a meaningful 1-on-1 intermediate food photography workshop with Bene at his cozy home studio today. ✨
He completely opened up my perspective — breaking down those tiny details I never even noticed before.
Loved how patiently he explained light falloff, modifier control, and all the pro techniques behind beautiful food shots. 📸🍽️
Already excited to come back for his advanced course soon!
I attended Bene Tan’s Food Photography Immediate Course over two days and learned so much! The patience and care in teaching from understanding light metering to post production editing were really appreciated. In just two days I gained so much insights into side and back lighting and I was so excited to immediately apply them to my work. ( Am attaching some of the photos that I used Bene's teachings to my own work)
What stood out most was how approachable Bene is. You will never feel afraid to ask questions as he takes the time to explain everything clearly.
A big thank you to Bene, Ada and of course Sunday for making the two days such an enjoyable and enriching learning experience!
